True Story! – Saved by the Cow

Hare Krsna!

It was month of Ashadha (July) i.e.the rainy season. This incident occurred in the village Nohar in Bikaner district. A lake of Daluram maharshi (a sage) was situated at a distance of 2.5 km from the village. 15 days back it had rained and there was quick sand out there. A thirsty cow in search of water had entered the lake to drink some water. But she had got stuck in mud and was already in knee deep mud. Cow was old and had become extremely tired in attempts to get out. It was difficult for her to even stand. So she fell down and was sitting in the mud.

Sun was setting. Who would come near a lake where there was no water? The cow being stuck in mud was waiting for the moment of death. In midnight it rained again, although lightly, and water started accumulating in the lake. The situation of cow was pitiable. Only her horns, mouth, nose and ears were above water. In the morning one man noticed the situation of cow and gave the information to Mr Dungermal Tiwari. Instantaneously, this young man arrived at the spot with bamboo, rope etc and immediately went to the lake with some friends and men. The water level was rising in the lake and the condition of cow was worsening.

This cow loving young man could not see the condition of cow and took her out of mud immediately. The cow did not have strength to stand or move. She was sent to a local goshala on cart. She was nicely taken care of for 15 days. The cow recovered but died after few months from some disease.

Sometime later in the same year this young man had gone to a nearby town for some work and while returning he went to his maternal uncle’s house in Churu. At his uncle’s house, he suddenly developed a very high fever of 105 F. The young man Dungarmal told his uncle to inform his family members about his severe sickness but the uncle did not bother to inform. His elder brother was worried that my brother was on his way back then why had he not returned yet. So he started to search for him and by coincidence he also went to the uncle’s house just to check for his brother. He saw his brother Dungarmal lying on deathbed there. A senior vaidya (doctor) was brought to check. Severe case of tetanus and pneumonia was the diagnosis. Quickly the treatment began. No laxity was shown in treatment. The condition of patient was going down steadily. After a week, the doctor said that tonight is crucial for his survival and told them to take care of him.

The brother was getting tensed every passing moment. The condition of patient was clear. The body was cold like ice. Some heart beat was observed. There was almost no hope. The brother of Dungarmal was crying alone as there were not many relatives there. Dungarmal had not eaten for a few days. His eyes were swollen. He was completely restless. He was steadily progressing towards death. Now he was not even aware that his brother was crying besides him.

At time of brahmamuhurta (4.30am, auspicious time), what Dungarmal saw was neither a dream nor hallucination. He saw that same cow whom he had saved nine months back from the mud in the lake was standing in front of him and telling  him, “Once you have saved me, today I am saving you. Now your disease is over and there is no danger to your life.” The cow disappeared having said thus.

Dungarmal also came back to consciousness. He could understand that his brother was crying for him. But his senses had no strength. He could not console his brother. After some time he opened his eyes and spoke signaling with his eyes. His eyes were conveying what he wanted to say. In the morning, the Vaid (ayurvedic doctor) came back to check. He never expected to see his patient in such good condition. He was also informed what had transpired in the night. He also knew the importance of go seva (service to cows) and hence could understand everything. Now the disease had already gone and so after good care and diet Dungarmal recovered in 2-3 days and went back to his village.
